Into the Outhouse: Outhouse Archeology

Presented by: Dan Wykes, Educator from the Byron Museum

From the late 1990s to the mid-2000s the Byron Museum helped coordinate a series of a half-dozen or so outhouse "pit-digs;" structured to carefully explore and mine several Victorian-to-Edwardian-era outhouse sites for artifacts.

Mr. Wykes’s focus will be on two downtown Byron sites; the 1840s residence of Lucius Read, Byron's verified "Underground Railroad station master;" and the 1890s residence of Dr. Albert Woodcock, who among other things maintained an old west and local history museum.

Artifacts found in the “pit-digs” will be on display. Some of the tools used to find and recover these artifacts, and some artifacts as well, will be available for hands-on inspection during the multi media presentation.

Location: German Valley Museum Complex—Air-Conditioned House

1:30 pm

Presented by: Dr. Gordon Dammann

Although medical care improved greatly during the Civil War, it wasn't until the period between 1869 and 1914 that the causes for sickness and disease were uncovered through the work of pioneers including: Ignac Semmelweis, Theodore Billroth, William Keen, Robert Koch, Joseph Barnes, Jonathan Letterman, Joseph Lister, John Brinton, Silas Mitchell, Louis Pasteur, William Hammond, and Madame Curie. Hear their stories and why so many others were reluctant to change their ways during this Era of New-Fangled Ideas.

Dr. Dammann is a Highland Community College instructor, national Civil War

guest lecturer, and founder of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in

Fredrick, Maryland. Dr. Dammann has served as an official guide at the Antietam Battlefield in Maryland. He is the author of Volumes I, II, and III of The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Civil War Medical Instruments and Equipment.

Dr. Dammann has been a favorite guest lecturer at the GV Museum for many years. He is an extremely knowledgeable speaker, and one you won’t want to miss.
